My vision for the town of White Bluff is to be more than just a typical bedroom community. White Bluff’s proximity to Nashville has provided the opportunity for city residents to make a quick trip to the country for a weekend getaway or a round of golf at Montgomery Bell State Park for years. We should continue to strengthen our partnership with Montgomery Bell and the nearby Harpeth River State Park to increase tourism in our town. This will bring additional revenue to our local businesses as well as the state parks, and the town will also benefit from increased sales tax revenue.
We should expand our offering of festivals and community events by using the Bibb - White Bluff Civic Center and Van F. Mills Amphitheater more frequently in addition to hosting events at the upcoming Bibb – White Bluff Nature Park. These facilities offer the perfect setting for building the sense of community in our town through celebratory and educational gatherings. They also provide opportunities to enact sections of our mobility plan by linking sidewalks and trails to the existing city sidewalks thereby promoting wellness in our town. New businesses will be drawn to the area by this increase in curb appeal and foot traffic.
Our White Bluff Police Department continues to grow to provide 24-hour coverage for residents and increased safety for our officers. During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, I advocated for an additional part-time firefighter for the White Bluff Fire Department. Now it is time to focus on a satellite fire station for the portion of town located south of the railroad. The citizens of White Bluff have always been generous, and the opportunity of donated land for a satellite station is a possibility. As newer equipment is purchased for the Fire Department’s Headquarters on Highway 47, the existing equipment can be housed in the satellite station.
In addition to the satellite fire station, a focus on gradually replacing the outdated water lines and fire hydrants needs to occur. Any new Planned Unit Developments approved for the town should require the replacement of undersized water lines and fire hydrants with limited capacity. This will be a requirement of the developer, and the town will work with WADC to address replacement of other water lines not within the scope of a PUD or new commercial development.
As the White Bluff Road repaving project capital outlay note is paid off, the town needs to initiate a new capital improvement project to repave many of our existing streets that are in need of repair. The yearly budget has included payments for a capital outlay note for several years so, this would be a continuation of a repaving project which will make our streets safer to use.
In addition to safety, I would initiate a long-term plan to replace the aging components at the Field of Dreams Playground and incorporate an ADA compliant park. Many of the original plastic and metal components are beginning to break as the playground is over 20 years old. With a long-term renovation plan in place, we can finally incorporate accessible features for all children to use.
In closing, I will also increase transparency in government through actions such as improvements to the Town’s website and more frequent community input meetings. State laws have changed the procedures for speaking at public meetings where citizens just sign up to speak before the meeting begins; however, the topic must be a part of the current agenda. Opportunities for input on items not currently on the agenda can be addressed at quarterly or bi-annual community meetings in addition to calling or emailing the governing body.
